Trooper Willie Gunn

Occupation:  Sergeant, US Army, Fort Benning, GA

Trooper Willie Gunn was born and raised in Okolona, Mississippi.  After graduating from Okolona High School in 1982, he joined the U.S. Army and was assigned to a Pershing (Nuclear) Field Artillery Battalion in the southern part of the Federal Republic of Germany.

During Trooper Gunn's faithful service in the Army, he was stationed with a variety of units to include, the 1/77th Armor, Ft. Carson, Colorado, 63rd Signal Battalion, Germershiem, FRG and 4/6 Infantry Battalion, Ft. Polk, LA.  During his tour with the 63rd Signal Battalion, Trooper Gunn served his country in a time of war participating in operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Provide Comfort in the deserts of Southwest Asia.

Trooper Gunn left the Army in the fall of 1992 and began a career in office management. During his 9 years as a civilian, he worked with a variety of companies in the fields of engineering, information technology and retail.  In 2000, Trooper Gunn met Trooper Derrick Davis (one of the founding members of the Atlanta Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers) and joined the group.  Trooper Gunn is very enthusiastic about his role in continuing the legacy and spreading the history of the Buffalo Soldiers.

In the fall of 2001, Trooper Gunn decided to return to the U.S. Army by enlisting in the Army Reserves as a Small Arms Instructor helping to train individual soldiers and their units scheduled for overseas deployment in basic marksmanship techniques. Not satisfied with Reserve service, Trooper Gunn applied for and was accepted back into the Regular Army. He currently assigned to HHC 29th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning as Instructor for soldiers attending their Basic and Advanced Enlisted Service Schools and the Infantry Officer's Basic Course.
