Calvin Horton
Trooper
Calvin Horton was born in 1956 in the city of Jackson,
Mississippi. He attended the Jackson Public Schools
and graduated from Murrah High School in 1974.
Calvin was a three-year letterman in football, track
and band while attending Murrah. After graduation,
he attended Mississippi Valley State University majoring
in business. He then transferred to Jackson State
University the following year and continued his studies
in business. After graduating from Jackson State
in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Calvin entered
into the world of banking full-time as an operations
analyst.
In
1980, Calvin relocated to Houston, Texas and entered
the University of Houston to pursue his MBA. He
continued to work in the banking world while taking
classes toward his MBA. In 1987, Trooper Calvin Horton
enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned units such
as the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky
and the Berlin Brigade in Berlin, Federal Republic Germany.
During his service, Calvin became a non-commissioned
officer and earned such honors as the Expert Infantryman's
Badge, Air Assault Badge and Jungle Expert certification.
In
1993, Calvin departed the military and relocated to
Atlanta, Georgia whereupon he entered the field of education
as a teacher. He acquired his education certification
from Brenau University in the area of middle school
education and his Masters of Science degree in Education
Leadership from Troy State University. Currently,
Trooper Horton is a middle school math teacher in the
Gwinnett County Public Schools and is pursuing a doctorial
degree from Argosy University in Education Leadership.
Trooper Calvin Horton became a Buffalo Soldier in 2000
after being re-united with a military acquaintance,
current chapter president Dallas Miller. Through
conversations with Trooper Miller, he decided that by
educating the public about African American's untold
history and facts was of great importance. Today,
Calvin is an active member and serves the Secretary
of the Greater Atlanta Area Chapter traveling throughout
the country keeping the hopes and dreams of his African
American predecessors alive. |
